What is a Thumbnail?
A picture associated with an item on your site. The Thumbnail gives the item a visual representation whenever it is displayed in a list.

Adding a Thumbnail to an Item

  1. Navigate to the item's Edit page
  2. Locate the Thumbnail property located on the Display tab.
  3. Click the Browse... button and locate an image on your computer's file system.
  4. Click the Save button.

The image is automatically resized for optimization. In some cases, some slight degradation in the image quality may occur.

Removing a Thumbnail

  1. Navigate to the item's Edit page
  2. Locate the Thumbnail property (often located on the Display tab).
  3. Click the [Remove Thumbnail] button. The thumbnail will be removed immediately.

Square Thumbnails
Under Site Preferences - General, there is an option called "Make All Thumbnails Square" which, when selected, will automatically crop all Thumbnail images so that they are perfectly square. Please see the example images below.

For images that are taller than they are wide, the top and bottom of the image will be cropped off. For images that are wider than they are tall, the left and right sides of the images will be cropped off. This will leave perfectly square images for your thumbnails.

What is the best file size and format to use for thumbnails/photos?
Use files with extensions of .jpg or .gif. When uploading your files, make them as small as possible so the site downloads the image quickly. While our Editor allows you to "size" the photo, it is best to size the image before you upload (you can use Microsoft Picture Manager or any other image editor to crop, compress, and resize images). Make sure you reduce the file size. Just because you shrink the physical dimension of an image doesn't mean its size is reduced. It could still result in slow load times.  Keep in mind the larger your original's dimensions, the more resizing and compression our system has to apply.

Are there any sample thumbnails to choose from?
We have a small library of free Thumbnails at

Additionally, we often use It is free, but you do have to sign up for an account. Some images require that you notify the content creator before you can use it, so only use pictures which display "Standard Restrictions Apply."
